Unfit to Serve

Donald Trump is leading an insurrection, and it is time to remove him from office.

He has made it clear that he does not plan to leave willingly. He now says he will never concede defeat, and he continues to reiterate the lie that he won November’s presidential election in a landslide.

Today, he took it one step further. He incited a mob of his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol as members of Congress were certifying his loss.

“You’ll never take back our country with weakness,” Trump told his supporters Wednesday. “You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.”

To be clear, Joe Biden is the rightful victor of the presidential election. He won the Electoral College by a decisive 306-232 margin. Seven million more Americans voted for Biden, and he is scheduled to be inaugurated in two weeks.

Anyone who supports Donald Trump’s drive to overturn the will of more than 81 million people is a traitor to this nation. Every member of Congress fighting to disenfranchise more than half the electorate is guilty of sedition.

More than 155 years after the South surrendered to the Union at Appomattox Courthouse, a Donald Trump supporter invaded the Capitol with a Confederate battle flag. Make no mistake about what is happening. This is a rebellion. It needs to be treated as such and put down immediately. Donald Trump and his people are trying to stage a coup d’état to overthrow the democratically elected government of the United States of America.

Vice President Mike Pence must convene the president’s cabinet, tonight, and invoke the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which stipulates a president can be removed from power if he is unfit to serve. How much more evidence do we need that Donald Trump is unfit to be president? What can be more unfit than sending supporters into the halls of Congress, then cheering them on while they terrorize our nation’s legislators?

Donald Trump is petrified of what happens when he leaves office. He is the subject of multiple criminal investigations. He is in an extraordinary amount of debt. Being president, for him, serves as a shield of immunity, and he is terrified of what will happen when that protection disappears.

As a result, this man will do anything to hang on to power. Republicans who have said that he just needs time to process his loss are deluding themselves. Donald Trump doesn’t care how many people get hurt. He doesn’t care how much damage he does to the nation. He doesn’t care that a woman was shot and killed Wednesday inside the Capitol. He only cares about himself.

Nobody in this country has been more loyal to Donald Trump than Mike Pence. For four years, Pence has done anything and everything the president has asked of him, not limited to repeating Trump’s ridiculous and easily disprovable lies.

This week, Donald Trump tried to strongarm Mike Pence into violating the Constitution of the United States. Pence, to his credit, resisted doing so, going against the man he has so dutifully served for the last four years for the first time. In response, Trump turned on him -- as he has done to so many others -- and sent his cult army straight to the Capitol to disrupt what are supposed to be ceremonial proceedings.

If we allow Donald Trump to remain president for two more weeks, who knows what kind of damage he will inflict on the nation? Who knows how much more violence will be carried out in his name, as he continues to spread his bald-faced lies? Who knows how many more people will die? This needs to end, and it needs to end now. Mike Pence needs to take over.

Relieve the president of command.
